Hubby is being an absolute Saint. Not only does he do anything I ask, he also is proactive. It really helps when you're a bit uncomfortable asking for help every ten seconds! He worked out that a light silk shawl is the best covering for my right arm - warm, light & soft. Being semi encased in plaster means I feel quite trapped and pannicky with the weight of the doona on it. He's also discovered that putting a bowl on the bed for me to put my cup down on is the best solution - the bedside table is on my right so that's no good, and the bowl means that if I knock the cup over, the bed stays clean & dry. And he made my bowl of salad into a work of art!
My right hand is a bit swollen - partly getting bashed by the fall, partly bruising working its way down my arm, and partly that the cuff & brace arrangement of the cast means my handcan't get higher than my heart so is gradually filling up with blood. Hubby gave it a good massage last night & I wiggle the fingers & flex the wrist regularly.
Which is odd, because when I've known others who broke their lower arms, they were told to avoid moving the fingers. I was able to move my fingers throughout - provided that my arm is being adequately supported & there's no pull on upper arm. The Drs told meto gently flex the hand several times per day to cut down on the rehab later.
Did some googling & discovered some people are in casts for up to 11 months, then there's physio for another year... urk! In good news, the break heals stronger, not weaker, & 90% of fractures in healthy adults heal to full use. Also it's unlikely that a pin & plate will make me heal faster, so an op is not likely. Phew!
I am resting in preparation of the Advent Carol Service which is tonight, and at which I must appear.
